Valve replacement is quite a common surgery in middle age. Valves may become worn by conditions such as rheumatic fever, infection or bacterial encocarditis.
Normal wear and tear and age-related deterioration may also mean that valve replacement is necessary. Coronary artery disease sometimes also means that valve replacement surgery is needed. Bangkok Hospital Medical Center includes a specialized heart hospital, Bangkok Heart Hospital.
This was established in 1989, and now has a team of medical staff such as adult and pediatric cardialogists, cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac rehabilitation physicians and radiologists with specialty and subspecialty training. The team has had training in the US, Japan and Australia.
Medical tourism is a growing industry in Thailand, and for Bangkok Hospital Medical Center. Globally, patients are starting to realize the benefits of having their surgery completed in Thailand. There is a higher level of personal care than in many Western countries, along with medical staff that are just as intensively trained, and adept at communicating in non-native languages.
Medical tourism in Thailand in recent years has earned the country 36.4 billion baht, and in recent times one Bangkok hospital treated over 150,000 international patients over a 12 month period.
The hospital serves tens of thousands of overseas patients annually.
The medical center offers translation services as well as catering to specialized cultural dietary requirements (kosher or halal food), making international patients more comfortable.
Bangkok Hospital Medical Center also recently received TEMOS (Telemedicine for the Mobile Society) accreditation. This network of affiliated hospitals ensures that hospitals in their worldwide network meet high standards of care, expertise, hygiene and safety. They also facilitate communication between primary care providers in home countries, and doctors in overseas hospitals.
